My first job, my first budget...

My first job, my first budget...

So you just got paid... Before you spend $1, I need you to pay and save for the things that you need to pay/save for before spending the money you want to spend.  Basic budgeting for youth may look something like this when you don't have that many responsibilities:

Paycheck Amount $180.00

*Emergency Fund/Savings Account  - 10% = $18.00

*401k Roth IRA/Stock Investment - 15% = $27.00

*My spending money = $135.00

If you are a minor and you have your own income you should ask the adult in your life to take you to the bank so that you can set up a checking account, savings account and if optional a Roth IRA to save for your retirement. Did you say "RETIREMENT"?  Absolutely!! Even if you are 15 years old it is best to save for retirement now because the sooner you start saving the sooner you will be able to have the opportunity to live life on your terms if you decide that you do not want to clock in at 9am and work until 5:30pm while someone is dictating your entire 8 hours each day, 5 or more days per week.

It is important to create a plan for your money so that the money doesn't just come and slip away from your hands on shoes, clothes, food and other things that are not helping be a more disciplined individual.  I want you to be able to handle your business when you move out of the house and you are solely responsible for your life.
